Another one of my things I like to do – basically anything related to numbers. I was going to start with printing out Pi to 1,000,000 but wordpress does something very strange when you try this. Once pasted and saved the page is viewed but instead of showing the Maths page it shows the Maths page with the content from my Word Press Theme page. Very strange behaviour indeed.
So instead I’m including the text file itself for download.Pi to 1,000,000 places (34)

Once you have the file you can start to do some analysis with it, here some starters for ten to get you going.

Big Numbers
Now Pi to 1,000,000 places got me thinking about big numbers, not too big like a Googol but big enough.
So just how big is 1 Trillion?
OK if you imagine a 1 inch cube of aluminium and count the number of aluminium atoms along one edge of the cube there will be about 1 Trillion. So the volume of the cube would be 1 trillion x 1 trillion x 1 trillion. So we know from this that aluminium atoms are pretty small as we fit 1 trillion of them in a line and that line would be 1 inch long. But how do you visualise a trillion? Well imagine that each atom was the size of a grain of sand. Now fill a dumper truck to the top with sand and you’ll have approximately 1 trillion grains of sand in the truck. You get it now – a trillion is big!
If you counted to a trillion stepping through the numbers one at a time each second it would take you approximately 31,709 years. So you’d need to count a lot quicker to fit that into a life time.
And for those interested in more big numbers and their names starting from a number you can sort of conceive. You’ll notice each time we move along to the next number we’re adding three more zero’s so basically multiplying the previous number by 1,000.

Pretty big eh? but how big?
Well a googol is greater than the number of protons in the known universe, of course we don’t actually know how many protons there are but we think somewhere in the region of 1 followed by 80 zeros. Now at first you might think thats not too far away from a googol but remember for every three zeros we add we are multiplying by a thousand.
Dont even think of trying to count that one out, no matter how fast you can count.
